Are Mobile Homes Safe During a Tornado?

23 May Are Mobile Homes Safe During a Tornado?

With the increase of tornadoes this time of year I thought I would give you a little information on mobile homes and there safety.  Properly set-up mobile homes are a lot stronger than you may realize.

Let me start by saying that if a tornado is coming your way please be smart and get to the closest storm shelter you have.  If a tornado directly hits you, it doesn’t matter if you are in a mobile home verses a million dollar brick home, you will be in trouble.

The preliminary report from the American Red Cross for the April 27th tornado outbreak in Alabama was this,

  • 6,237 single-family homes were destroyed and another 5,039 suffered major damage.
  • 1,275 manufactured homes were destroyed, and 615 suffered major damage.
  • 295 apartment units were destroyed, and 163 suffered major damage.
  • 5,196 homes, manufactured homes and apartment units received minor damage.

I received some valuable information a few years ago from  Alabama Manufactured Housing Association (AMHA). It stated that The Florida Regulatory Agency for factory-built homes surveyed over 11,000 manufactured homes in seven counties after Hurricane Charley in 2004. The results were that EVERY manufactured home built since 1994 to the new wind standard came through the hurricane WITHOUT major damage.

If you would like to read more details pertaining to tie downs, and proper set-ups of mobile homes you can visit http://www.nachi.org/manufactured-home-tie-downs.htm

Now, I am not saying you need to stay in your mobile home with a tornado heading right at you, but I wanted to give you some information and let you know mobile homes have come a long way in their safety. Hopefully this has eased your mind as you consider purchasing a mobile home and the tornado season that is upon us.
